What are Panic Attacks
Panic attacks can be frightening. Fortunately, though, they are physically harmless. They can occur at random or after a “triggers” event. Panic attacks will peak in intensity rapidly, and then they will subside and go away with or without medical help.
- People who experience panic attacks may fear that they are dying, suffocating, or having a heart attack. They may also fear that they are going crazy. In any case, they try to remove themselves from whatever situation they may be in.
- Some people begin breathing rapidly and complain that their hearts are pounding in their chest. Often, within an hour or so, the symptoms fade away.
- About 5% of the population experience panic attack sometime during their life time. Those who have repeated attacks require further evaluation from a mental health professional. Frequent panic attacks can indicate a panic disorder, depression, or another form of anxiety-based illnesses.
