			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sedentary lifestyles are becoming very commonplace. According to the WHO, between 60% and 70% of individuals worldwide are not engaged in the minimum suggested amount of physical activity needed to achieve and maintain good health.</p>
<p>That is an astonishing statistic and it should not just worry us, but I believe it should shock us into doing something about our health and fitness. The fact is that if you are not getting enough physical activity you are at risk for some very serious health problems and, perhaps, an early demise.</p>
<p>If you ended up needing to be cared for by your wife, husband or children, or worse yet, stuck in a managed care home because you suffered a debilitating heart attack or stroke due to your poor lifestyle habits, how would you feel? This question is not a laughing matter, nor is it too remote a possibility for you and I to think about.The fact is that non-communicable diseases associated with physical inactivity are now the greatest public health problem in most countries around the world. And, the worldwide trends in lack of physical activity are of particular concern among a few high risk populations, such as young people, women, and older adults.</p>
<p>There are a number of reasons that there has been such a marked increase in sedentary lifestyles. Labour-saving appliances and other devices, widespread use of the automobile, and automation are three of the most common factors. Added to these is the fact that so many people now spend hours sitting in front of a computer screen or a television. In particular, significant numbers of young people, even young children, are not getting enough physical activity as they are spending far too much time surfing the Internet, chatting online and playing online games. For teenagers and children, the risk of suffering from some of the debilitating diseases listed below is multiplied significantly because they are so physically inactive at younger and younger ages.</p>

I will begin by answering two very important questions: &#8220;What are normal blood sugar levels?&#8221; and &#8220;What are the high blood sugar symptoms to watch out for?&#8221;</p>
<p>Blood glucose levels are basically just numbers which reflect the amount of sugar currently circulating in your body. To keep your body alive and functioning well, you need a certain amount of sugar in your blood. Too much or too little sugar in the body are equally dangerous and will eventually kill you if not corrected. Thankfully, our bodies have multiple, complex mechanisms in place to ensure that we always have normal blood sugar levels.</p>
<p>However, in pre-diabetics and diabetics, this important balancing act of maintaining normal blood glucose levels is disrupted. If this disruption continues and is ignored, our bodies will show high blood glucose symptoms or occasionally low blood glucose symptoms. But these high blood sugar symptoms are not the most troublesome aspect of disrupting this balancing act. The main problem lies in the many health consequences associated with long-term, higher-than-normal blood glucose levels.</p>
<p>The numbers which reflect normal blood sugar levels are:</p>
<p>These numbers are very important, however they may not mean much to pre-diabetics or diabetics who do not need to do regular blood sugar tests. Also, since most people have never had a blood sugar test, and have no way of knowing whether they have normal blood sugar levels, it is important to watch out for symptoms of diabetes. That leads us to the next question: &#8220;What are the high blood sugar symptoms to watch out for?&#8221;Even if you think you are maintaining a normal blood sugar level, it is important to know what the high blood glucose symptoms are so that you can warn your loved ones who might be at risk of having diabetes. Some common high blood sugar symptoms are Urinating more often than usual.</p>
<p>Incidentally, the urine is commonly colorless and odorless. Just as a side note, in certain countries, you may even observe ants or other insects crawling to the toilets due to the sweetness of the urine. Needing to wake up more than twice nightly to urinate. Constantly feeling thirsty and needing to drink more water than usual (and is unrelated to recent increase in physical activity). Patients normally describe this symptom as quite troublesome.</p>
<p>Having more frequent hunger pangs than usual, assuming you have been eating regularly. Feeling tired even after regular sleep. Unable to sustain an erection although you were well able to do so in previous years. Multiple and recurring infections that you do not normally get, including yeast infections. Unexplained or unintentional loss of weight. Loss of weight of more than 5% body weight in 30 days is considered as significant, if it is unrelated to any recent dietary habit changes.</p>
<p>Having recent new or increased visual problems, such as blurriness or white patches. It is important not to dismiss visual problems as part of a normal aging process.</p>
<p>It is not uncommon for people with high blood glucose levels to present to the hospital with complications or manifestations of long term poor control of their blood glucose levels. It has been estimated that in the United States, as many as 50% of diabetics have some form of complications of diabetes before being diagnosed with diabetes. You will be surprised that there is approximately 30% of people are currently living in the United States without knowing they have diabetes.</p>

<p>Prior to you putting the key in the ignition, test your blood sugar. There are some great glucometers out there, like the Accu-Check Compact with the Accu-Check Multi-clix lancet pen.</p>
<p>The Accu-Check Compact has a 17 strip drum inside so you don&#8217;t have to take any extra strips with you. The Accu-Check Multi-clix lancet pen has a drum that automatically holds 6 lancets within the pen to use quickly and easily. Again, you won&#8217;t have to bring any lancets separately with you. If your blood sugar is low, treat yourself to some juice or hard candy and don&#8217;t drive until your blood sugar is back to normal. Usually 80 mg/dl and higher you should feel better. Then try and eat a small meal, like a low fat cheese and/or turkey sandwich.</p>
<p>Usually in 15 minutes taking 15-20 grams of Carbohydrate (CHO) will usually bring up your blood sugar to normal range. You can have a 4-6 ounce glass of juice, glucose tablets or 2-3 pieces of hard candy. Don&#8217;t overdo it because your blood sugar will then go sky high. If it doesn&#8217;t return within normal limits in 15 minutes, repeat the 15-20 grams of CHO and then check your blood sugar in 15 minutes.</p>
<p>Usually if your blood sugar is above 80 mg/dl, you should feel fine but sometimes going above 100 mg/dl, you&#8217;ll feel better. You should always follow with a small meal that contains CHO, protein that contains a small amount of fat.</p>
<p>Always make sure you have something to eat right within reach in the car (not in the trunk!). I tell my father to put 2-3 peppermint candy right in his pocket and have a supply of hard candy or peppermint candy always stashed in his car.</p>
<p>It is best if you eat 6-8 small meals a day. This would include a CHO, protein food that contains a little fat included. Example would be a cheese sandwich that contains either 1 or 2 slices of bread, a cheese that is low fat or turkey low in fat but not fat free. The protein and fat does help to stablize your blood sugar over a period of time instead of a quick spike in your blood sugar and a quick drop in blood sugar like juice would do.</p>
<p>During your trip if you need to take an insulin injection or an oral blood sugar medication, then make sure you eat as prescibed with your medication, otherwise your blood sugar can go low. I will be writing about how insulin and certain oral blood sugar medications can make your sugar go low. Not all insulin, esp. Lantus, or oral diabetic medications make your blood sugar low.</p>

But, in the Western world, black tea has been overwhelmingly more popular than green tea until recently. But, as we have learned more about green tea&#8217;s unique taste and many health benefits, it has gained popularity all over the world.</p>
<p>Green tea, like black tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. The difference between green and black tea comes from how the tea is processed. Black tea is fermented during processing; green tea is not. After the tea leaves are plucked, they are laid out to wither for about 8 to 24 hours.</p>
<p>This lets most of the water evaporate. Next, to prevent the oxidation (fermentation) process, the leaves are steamed or pan fried. Finally the leaves are rolled before a final drying takes place. After this final drying, the leaves, which still look green, can now be sorted, graded and packaged.</p>
<p>The lack of fermentation causes green tea to look, smell and taste different than black tea. It typically brews to a pale green color and has a bit of a grassy flavor and aroma. This lack of fermentation also causes green tea to have more health benefits than black tea.</p>
<p>The fermenting process used for black and oolong teas causes a compound called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) to be oxidized, and converts it into other compounds. EGCG is a very powerful anti-oxidant, but the compounds it converts to during fermenting are not as healthful.</p>
<p>This difference means that this powerful anti-oxidant is in its most natural state; the state in which it provides the most protection to the body.</p>
<p>EGCG, like other anti-oxidants are important to the body because they rid our bodies of free radicals. Free radicals are oxygen containing molecules that are created as a byproduct of our digestive processes. Unless they are eradicated from our bodies, free radicals damage our cells and DNA, causing aging and disease.</p>
<p>A diet rich in fruits and vegetables and other plant based foods like green tea and wine, help us get the anti-oxidants we need to stay healthy. And, EGCG is one of the best and most protective anti-oxidants found in any food.</p>
<p>For this reason, cultures who have traditionally consumed large amounts of green tea throughout their lives have been shown to have lower incidences of many serious illnesses including cancer, heart disease and high cholesterol. In recent years there has been much scientific research linking green tea with a longer, healthier life.</p>
<p>Green tea has also been shown to aid in weight loss by speeding up the metabolism and increasing the oxidation of fat cells in the body. For years it was assumed that green tea&#8217;s caffeine was responsible for this ability to aid weight loss.</p>
<p>However, more recent research has shown that green tea is more effective at speeding weight loss than other beverages with higher caffeine contents. Researchers have concluded that it is the caffeine in green tea combined with green tea&#8217;s anti-oxidants that make green tea a better weight loss supplement than other caffeinated beverages.</p>
<p>Green tea was first grown in China. Most of the green tea grown today is grown in China and Japan, which is also where most of the world&#8217;s green tea is consumed. However, it has gained a great deal of popularity in other parts of the world, primarily because we now better understand its health benefits.</p>
<p>Today, nearly any tea purveyor will carry green tea in loose form. There are many green tea varieties with distinct tastes. In addition, there are many varieties of flavored green tea. These appeal to the many people who may not find plain green tea&#8217;s somewhat grassy flavor to be appealing. When flavored with other fruits and herbs, green tea can take on many different flavors.</p>
<p>One of the most traditional green tea forms is matcha. This form of green tea is used in Japanese tea ceremonies and was the primary form of green tea in Japan for centuries. Matcha is simply green tea that has been crushed into powder form. It is then whisked into hot water to make traditional Japanese green tea. Most other parts of the world use loose tea to make green tea rather than matcha.</p>
